TV TIPS (SATURDAY)

15:40 Goodwood – Stewards Cup

After a spectacular week so far, Goodwood once again takes centre stage on the fifth and final day of its ”Glorious” meeting. Having seen the likes of Too Darn Hot, Pinatubo and Japanese Superstar Deirdre strutting their stuff, perhaps rather aptly, today see’s the handicappers taking centre stage in the Stewards Cup. First run in 1840 and known as a heritage handicap, this 6 furlong sprint is open to horses aged three and above and has a purse of over a quarter of a million pounds.

Statistically speaking, those drawn in double figure draws have dominated over the last decade having taken seven of those running’s, using the same time-scale, age appears no barrier although no horse over seven has been successful since 1995. Frankie Dettori is another angle worth bearing in mind today having been responsible for riding two of the last five winners and the little Italian has been booked to ride the well backed, Arecibo this time around

Current market leader, Khaadem hails from the Charles Hills yard and looks an intriguing challenger on just his seventh start. Possibly in need of his racecourse return when seventh at Ascot, he had proven Group horses in behind when second in a Group3 at Newbury last time, providing that was no fluke he is entitled to go very close here although his draw in three could be a disadvantage.

Justanotherbottle was agonisingly nailed on the line in last seasons renewal, since then he has rather failed to fire although you suspect this has long been the plan and he is now four pounds below last year’s mark.

Flavius Titus has twice won by narrow margins this season, he could be above his current mark though he did run rather poorly on his only previous visit here. Spanish City gives trainer Roger Varian a strong looking hand, often there or thereabouts in these types of contests, the application of blinkers today could well work the oracle and there would be no more deserving of another victory.

Cosmic Law has won running downhill and didn’t run too badly when second at Newcastle last time, this demands significantly more though at just three years of age, he could be the potential dark horse. Growl is another for Fahey and despite his sometimes questionable attitude, he could go well at a price.

True Mason, Gulliver, Lake Volta and Summerghand could all play major parts if on a going day, however, given his near miss last season and the drop in weights this time around, Justanotherbottle is taken to gain compensation under James Doyle.
