12:45 Southwell
For today’s selections away from the live TV action we head to Southwell. First up is the 12:45 a five furlong nursery.
Just the four runners declared here and the vote goes to Rita’s Boy for Karl Burke. Second last time out over six furlongs, he was sent of a very well backed 7/4 favourite. He travelled well on that occasion and took up the running at the furlong pole before being out battled by the winner. The drop back in distance along with Danny Tudhope taking over from apprentice Jordan Vaughan further bolsters the case for the selection. He is 3lb higher here, but that mark looks within range if repeating the effort of 8 days ago.
The danger looks to be Bahango for Patrick Morris. Winner of his last start when beating a subsequent winner from Richard Hannon’s stable and if able to transfer that form to this surface he could cause the selection the most problems, particularly if given a soft lead.
Rita’s Boy (WIN)
13:15 Southwell
The second selection runs in the third race on Southwell’s card. The 13:15, A Class 3 Handicap ran over six furlongs.
Claim The Roses is the pick here. Disappointing when last seen at Newmarket in April he has been given plenty of rest and returns to action after a 256 day absence. This is an easy in grade and Ed Vaughan’s Colt has run well after a break as demonstrated when being beaten under a length on his penultimate start at Kempton. He has a clear liking for Polytrack and, with the sire giving plenty of confidence he will handle the switch to Fibresand, he looks to have a great chance here of adding to his two previous victories.
Guishan looks to have a big chance here, if able to overcome a career high mark. He is proven over course and distance and with Southwell being a specialist track it could pay to side with the shrewd trainer Michael Appleby.
Canyari is another lining up for shrewd connections. If the market speaks in his favour he should not be discounted.

13:45 Southwell
The final selection of the meeting runs in the 13:45. A six furlong maiden.
Ed Vaughan carries the burden of two of my selections today and the second of the two, Quaintrelle, hopes to gain his first victory against a weak field. The drop in trip and switch to Fibresand give hope of an improved performance as does the addition of first time blinkers. Ed Vaughan has a superb record at the venue, 29% over the last five years and Quaintrelle can add to the tally here.
Sea Whisper should not be ignored for a stable who like to have a gamble and if the market speaks in her favour she should not be far away.
Deftera Fantutte is another who if handling the surface can be a player in a very modest affair.
