This looks brutal and is probably not a very appealing betting contest for most, despite this we shall get straight to the point and hand the selection to likely favourite Fiery Character. Totally unfancied when making her debut at Newmarket’s Craven meeting, she made a mockery of her price and won fairly comfortably having made most. Another positive for the Dascombe challenger is that fillies have won four of the last five renewals of this and so seeing as the trainer has won two recent renewals, the fact she is a filly and with a good draw to attack from, she is taken to blast out and make all. Copper Knight has shown clear signs of promise and hails from a yard who recently won the Guineas, he will likely prove a major threat but he was beaten at 5/4 the last day and this hardly looks easier. Stoneyford Lane was outpaced on debut before showing a pleasing attitude to mow them all down late on, this track poses a significant question over her pace however. Awesome Allan and Letmestopyouthere come from a good yard and could play a part but overall the favourite looks the one to beat.

Like the opener this hardly appeals as an appetising betting prospect, likely favourite Somehow will almost certainly go off odds on and the best alternative is to find one that could sneak a place. Diamonds Pour Moi won what was probably a moderate affair at Kempton but showed a pleasing attitude in the process and hails from a yard renowned for their handling of fillies. She will probably tempt the value hunters and looks a decent alternative for them adverse to betting odds on types. Moorside is another likely to tempt place players, twice beaten in maidens she is open to progress this terms and comes from a yard for their liking of Chester. She at the current prices offers more value than the aforementioned Diamonds Pour Moi and is handed a speculative vote to run into the places. Dessertoflife won a G3 in Germany last year and therefore carries a penalty in this, she will find this much easier than the fillies mile but that penalty makes life tough and she is vulnerable to an improver. Mirsaalah chinned a Gosden good thing the last day and is appealing going forwards, this looks too hot for her mark however. Somehow is bred to be very good and looked useful when winning at Leopardstown last time. From the O’Brien yard it is impossible to put you off backing her but price tells you the tale and though not selected, she really ought to beat these.

The theme of unappealing may be somewhat off-putting to most but with 19 runners and 2m2f to run at this looks almost impossible and a whole host have strong claims. Quick Jack finished 2nd in this last season and is comfortably the one to beat given he was beaten by subsequent Ascot Gold Cup winner Trip To Paris that day. Drawn in 16 he will need all of Moore’s magic to get up and another concern is that he always seems to find at least one too good. Beaten by stablemate Heartbreak City over an inadequate trip last time it is likely both will be popular in the betting, both will be taken on today however. Le Maitre Chat has been called quite a few names in his time and his 0-9 record in handicaps is rather off putting, couple that with his rather questionable attitude and you have an infuriating type. A decent 6th on his 1st run for Ian Williams in last seasons Cesarewitch does hint he has a major pot in him though and as the yard have won it before, he is handed a real speculative vote at decent prices. Nakeeta and Gang Warfare are improving horses, both on a crest of a wave it would be foolish to dismiss either out of hand but this is tougher. John Reel, Steve Rogers and Silver Concorde are other who need serious consideration, you could literally point out dangers all day though and as such a stab in the dark on Le Maitre Chat is advised.

Another big field and the poor punter once again has something of a needle to find in the haystack, hard luck tales are almost assured too but unlike a few of the earlier races this does prickle my interest. Blythe Spirit loves it here and has won her four handicaps at around this trip. Handed a rather tricky draw on 8 she will have to have her wits about her at the start but she is taken to grab a lead and take some catching. At decent prices she looks a value to bet to place and is given to do just that. Unusually for me, as the field is so big I will be going double handed and though Kimberella is about as annoying as the overstaying mother in law, he definitely has a pot of this type in him. Without a win for nearly two years he wouldn’t be one to chase at short odds but as he’s well drawn and at an each way price, he is also handed a vote to bring home some place money. Confessional very nearly made it into my selections as he has a good record in this, drawn is 15 however he is reluctantly overlooked though he is a very big price on the face of it. Growl, Roudee and Avon Breeze are others with chances and a move in the market for Lexi’s Hero would be very interesting.
