As a usual rule of thumb I would advise against betting in big field maidens but I do tend to suggest a weird and wonderful type and this is most certainly one of them. Most of the usual big named owners and trainers are represented here and the stoutly bred Alkawn is sure to prove popular first time up for John Gosden, a 240,000 guineas purchase as a foal he is related to all manner of winners and is related to a few two year old winners. A close eye must be kept on the market with him but rather off puttingly, he has been gelded already and may prove better given time. Bernhard flopped on debut when last seen but is almost sure to find his feet this term and represents the Stoute stable, Rip N Roar is another from a big yard, he too has been gelded but must be watched in the market. The Hannon yard are represented with likely favourite Acaster Malbis, he probably sets a fair enough standard and will surely go close, he is far from bomb proof however and it would probably be a shade disappointing if something couldn’t beat him. Occult is another Gosden challenger and his third at Doncaster over slightly shorter was a pleasing effort, he will likely improve on that run and is feared tremendously. A chance will be taken however and comes in the shape of Imperial March whom was also beaten over slightly shorter at Doncaster last time. Clive Cox knows how to train a winner round here and his charge was probable a little unfortunate to run into bother was staying on last time, with that experience likely to be improved upon and with the extra yardage looking likely to suit, a chance is taken he can run into a place at double figure odds.
Imperial March (E/W)
Triple course and distance winner Powerful Presence has gone twenty one races without a victory now and has been called a few names during that run, she requires a leap of faith at shortish odds but has plenty in her favour today. A winner here off 87 in 2013 she is now running off 75 and will surely take advantage before long, the yards horses have also hit the ground running so a chance is taken that she will finally take advantage of her lowly mark. Playtothewhistle arrives here in search of a hat-trick having notched up two recent wins on the all weather, it would be folly to dismiss the Smart challengers chances out of hand but he has flopped in a major way on his three turf starts to date and 2/1 looks very skinny. Slingsby is a second specialist nad has filled that position on the last five occasions, he has every chance of doing that again but couldn’t be given with any confidence and is probably best watched without his usual headgear on. Beautiful Stranger and Piceno will probably pop up somewhere during the campaign and although well beaten last time, Tanawar has a victory here and could pose a threat.
Powerful Presence (WIN)
Our final selection of the day comes in the curtain closer here at Nottingham and is supplied by the in form mark Johnston yard. His Yorkidding was very highly tried after winning smartly second time up at Hamilton and appeared to be a tad one paced when last seen at Newmarket. This represents quite a big drop in class on her seasonal reappearance and the step up in trip looks likely to suit, coupled with the recent form of her yard, she is taken to run them into the ground. Noro Lim is hard to gauge and must prove he handles the turf as well as he handled the artificial surfaces, his victory in a maiden last time at Lingfield was fairly impressive however and he probably deserves the main danger tag. Perceived has won here and has every chance whilst at bigger prices, Solstalla has always looked in need of a trip and could upset if ready.
